Over the past six days, I've been to Florida for a two day study break, and to Akron, Ohio for a three day "Weekend to Remember" with Nancy. As you can imagine, I've been exposed to a great deal of information in that time, (one of the participants in Florida said the information blast was like drinking water from a fire hydrant!) but the most memorable "byte" was the equation that forms the title of this post:
Information - Application = Information.
I can't overstate the importance of that truth! We hear messages on Sunday, lessons on Monday, read memos from the boss on Tuesday, read the Bible on Wednesday, get inundated with information from commercials and tv shows on Thursday...we are on information overload. But have you ever heard of "application overload"? I didn't think so. We may be overwhelmed with so much to do and so little time, but more often what overwhelms us is the sheer number of choices we have because of all the information invading our brains at any given moment. Maybe that's why, when Jesus was asked, "What is the greatest commandment in the law?" He didn't respond with a summary of all 600+ laws in the Mosaic code, but with two brief statements that sum up the whole Old Testament: Love the Lord your God with all you heart soul and mind; and love your neighbor as yourself." Simple? Definitely. Applicable? Amazingly! Doable? Only in the power of the Holy Spirit! What if we invested today, whatever is on our to do list today, with only one application point: Love God and others. What if we DO that? Then we can change the equation:
Information + Application = Transformation
That has to be Jesus' kind of math!
