Are You Ready.....

During this advent season, we've been focusing on "Preparing the Way for Jesus."  That's a little different--or a LOT different than what it typically means to get ready for Christmas in our culture.  So are you ready.... are you ready for Jesus to come--if today was the day would you be ready to hear Jesus say, "Well done good and faithful servant.  Enter the joy of your Master's kingdom!" That's a big question isn't it?  I remember hearing a preacher say, "Everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to get ont he bus today!"  When I think of the tension between being here and being there, I always think of the Apostle Paul who said, "For me to live is Christ and to die is gain."  What an attitude!  No wonder he led so many to the Lord, started so many churches, and saw the Gospel become real in so many unreached places.

For many Christians today, heaven may seem like a secondary reality, but heaven is our home.  I don't say that in a morbid way, but in that same way that Paul said, "For me to live is Christ and to die is gain."  So many times we worry about our security and safety.  The reality is there is one security--Jesus, and the only safety is found in him.  May we truly live in such a way as to be ready... to His glory and to our gain.  As we live like that, we'll be "magnetic," we'll draw others to Jesus, because everyone understands the authenticity of a life that is anchored in heaven, and lived well here on earth!

The Golden Compass

Emmy and I went to see the Golden Compass this afternoon.  So much has been written about it's atheist author, and about its subtle undermining of the Church and faith, that I thought I'd better see it first hand, so I could make an intelligent assessment.  Let me say that while it DOES have a number of theological negatives (more on that in a moment), I can't categorically say, "Don't see it."  It's a better than average movie of its type.  The special effects are impressive.  The story line is interesting.  The action is intense--too intense for small children in my opinion.

The movie is filled with virtue, unfortunately the virtuous characters in the movie are on what we would traditionally call the "bad" side.  The authorities, known as the "Magisterium," who represent the Church, and thus ought to be "good," are actually, the villains, since they're in the practice of capturing and torturing children and inhibiting the pursuit of "truth."  Meanwhile, the "Gyptians" (Gypsies), a banished bear, a renegade "Aeronaut", hundreds of witches, and Lyra, the heroine, who is an orphan girl who lies frequently--sometimes with the intention of helping others, sometimes, because it works to her advantage--are the "good guys"!  Also, every person has a "daemon," which is an animal that exists outside of him or her and is essentially the person's "soul".  This is an idea that is quite contrary to our own understanding of the soul, although as Emmy pointed out is quite creative.

Children won't catch all that.  If they liked Narnia, they'll probably like the Golden Compass. It's been written that the second and third installments of this trilogy, should they be produced, will show the Church in the darkest of images, and will emphasize a godless understanding of life.  I can't say anything about that.  All I can say is that Emmy and I had a good conversation after the movie.  We concluded that while we don't endorse witches as heroines, or lying as a means of gaining what one wants--even if it is a good cause, and we wouldn't pay to see it again, we don't see it as the ominous threat to our faith that some have proclaimed.  Then again, we have a strong faith, and tended to see the positives in the movie, being that it is of a genre both of us like. Emmy made a helpful comment, "Overall, it has a better theme than any of the Harry Potter books/movies.  You have to really be looking to see the negative things people are saying about the movie. If you hadn't told me about them I wouldn't have caught any of them."

After all the pre-release hype, I was pleasantly surprised by the movie.  While I can't endorse its overall content, and I wouldn't recommend it at all for younger children, because of the violence as well as the emphasis on kidnapping children and the whole "daemon" metaphysics, I would give it a cautious affirmation.  That means as a parent, I wouldn't let  my older children see it either, unless I saw it and discussed it with them. (But then, that's always been our approach, seeing that as parents we believe we hold the primary responsibility for the spiritual and physical welfare for our daughters!)

Next Step #30

One of the most important roles of the Holy Spirit in all of history is as the “Father” of Jesus. As we read in both Matthew and Luke, and angel visited Joseph and Mary to let them know that Mary would become pregnant, and that the child conceived in her would be born of the Holy Spirit, and thus would be the “Son of God.” I don’t pretend to understand HOW this took place, what I do understand is THAT it took place, and that makes all the difference! Never before or since has the Holy Spirit intervened in such a way with humanity. Only Mary, the virgin from Nazareth has ever conceived a child through the agency of the Holy Spirit, and because of that miraculous moment, each of us has the opportunity to know God personally—in and through Jesus Christ! We must all remember as those who live not only on this side of Jesus’ birth, but also on this side of His life, death on the cross, resurrection from the dead and ascension into heaven that Jesus made certain that we would know Him and His power. How?  He sent the Holy Spirit!  As we live each day, we may be empowered by the same One, who caused Jesus to be conceived in the womb of Mary. The Holy Spirit lived (and lives) uniquely in Jesus since, they and God, the Father, are ever three and ever one, but He also lives in each of us who call on the name of Jesus. May we remember in this Christmas season that we prepare the way for Jesus most fully, when we allow the Holy Spirit to fill and control us moment by moment!

Hidden In Plain Sight...

Yesterday morning as I was running on Rails-to-Trails I noticed many things that had been there all summer and fall, but I had never seen them:  FOOT PRINTS.  I know there's a man who parks his truck in the Rails-to Trails parking lot and walks to work nearly every day.  Yesterday for the first time I saw where he veered off the trail and into the woods to his work place.  I saw rabbit tracks, deer tracks, squirrel tracks, and even a mole as it scurried across the trail in front of me--well actually, I saw the SNOW mounding up and then falling back nearly in place as the mole ran under it.  What made all of the things that had been there every day I've run on the trail was the fresh, white snow that had been falling and was still falling as I ran.

Immediately, a thought occurred to me:  each of us has sins in our lives that are "invisible" to others.  We don't see them as we pass at school, work, in the community, or even on Sunday mornings at worship, but they're there.  God sees them.  Their "tracks" are visible to Him.  The amazing truth of Scripture, though, is that even though our sins be as scarlet--a most brilliant and visible hue--they shall be as WHITE as SNOW through the blood of Jesus.  The next time you see the snow, think of Jesus and His most precious gift of forgiveness, which doesn't just "cover" our sins, but washes them away!

Next Step #29

Next Step #29  --  The Holy Spirit and Advent

Hi Everyone!

As we enter the “Advent” or Christmas season, let’s consider the role of the Holy Spirit in preparing the way for Jesus. While the word, “Advent” is not biblical, the season of the year has been celebrated for hundreds of years by Christians around the world. Advent consists of the four Sundays prior to Christmas.  Advent literally means “Coming.” It is celebrated because Jesus CAME into the world, AND because He is coming again. So what is the Holy Spirit’s role in Advent?  His role is the same as in EVERY season of the year—to give us the power and guidance we need to be ready for Jesus’ return. Just as it takes the Holy Spirit in us to be able to give thanks “no matter what,” it takes the Holy Spirit to ensure that we are READY for Jesus’ return at any moment. Without a doubt my favorite Scripture regarding the Holy Spirit is Ephesians 5:18, and once again I turn to it this week as we consider the Spirit’s role in our preparing the way for Jesus. The Apostle Paul reminded us, “Don’t get drunk with wine, which leads to debauchery, but be filled with the Holy Spirit.” By now you know that the command is ON-GOING, literally BE BEING FILLED with the Holy Spirit. That means that as we go through these next twenty-three days until Christmas, each and every moment is to be lived with the Holy Spirit leading and controlling us. If we do that, we will be prepared for Jesus’ coming. We will exercise the joy that is supposed to fill us in this season, AND we will empower others to see Jesus, as we show Him to them in our lives. Let make this ADVENT season, be a season when the Holy Spirit COMES moment by moment into our lives, so that all will experience the power of God’s greatest gift-Jesus through us!
